Symptoms

  • Fatigue

  • Puffy eyes, especially in the morning

  • Muscle cramps at night

  • Swollen feet and ankles

  • Need to urinate more, especially at night

Causes

  • Diabetes

  • Hypertension

  • Inflammation of the kidneys

  • History of CKD in family

  • Lupus and other immune system supressing diseases

  • Repeated urinary infections

Facts

  • 37 million American adults have CKD

  • Persistent proteinuria (protein in the urine) means CKD is present

  • African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Seniors are at increased risk

  • Two simple tests can detect CKD: blood pressure, urine albumin and serum creatinine
